Quality fabric sofa in a family living room

Sofa prices in the UK run from a few hundred pounds to many thousands, and two sofas that look almost identical in photos can be £1,000 apart. So how much should you actually spend to get a sofa that is comfortable, looks good and lasts?

We have been selling sofas from our Rotherham showroom since 1972, and this is the question customers ask us most. This guide explains the UK price bands, what you really get at each level, where it is worth spending more, and how to get the best sofa your budget allows. If you are just starting out, read our complete guide on how to choose a sofa first.

Quick answer: how much should you spend on a sofa?

British-made frames are a big part of the price difference. Read why British-made sofas are worth choosing.

For a sofa you will use every day and want to keep for around ten years, most UK households should plan to spend in the mid-range, roughly £800 to £2,000, depending on size and material.

Under £800: fine for occasional use, a first flat or a short-term home.

£800 to £2,000: the sweet spot for everyday family use, with better frames, fillings and fabrics.

£2,000 and over: premium leather, large corners, power recliners and longer guarantees.

Got a smaller budget? Ex-display and in-stock sofas can get you mid-range quality for a budget price.

UK sofa price bands at a glance

There is no official price list, but across the UK market sofas fall into three broad bands. Larger corner, U-shaped and recliner sofas sit towards the top of each band.

Price band Typical spend Best for Expect it to last
Budget About £300 to £800 Occasional use, rentals, first homes Often a few years with daily use
Mid-range About £800 to £2,000 Everyday family sofas Around 8 to 10 years or more with care
Premium £2,000 and over Leather, large corners, power recliners 10 years and beyond

A note on these figures

These are general UK guide prices, not a quote. Prices vary with size, fabric grade and brand. Browse real prices in our collections of sofas under £700, £1000 and £1500 below.

What you actually get at each price

Budget sofas: about £300 to £800

At this level you are mostly paying for looks. Frames are often made from softer woods or board, seat cushions use lighter foam that flattens sooner, and fabrics are thinner. A budget sofa can be a sensible buy for a spare room or a short-term home, but under daily family use it may start to sag or wear within a few years.

Mid-range sofas: about £800 to £2,000

This is where quality improves the most for every extra pound. Expect stronger frames, better seat support, higher density foam or foam wrapped in fibre, harder-wearing fabrics and more choice of size and colour. Many made-to-order ranges sit here, so you can choose the fabric and configuration. Start with our sofas under £1000 and sofas under £1500.

Premium sofas: £2,000 and over

Here you pay for top-grade leather, large corner and U-shaped layouts, power reclining with headrests and USB charging, and longer guarantees. Italian leather ranges and big cinema setups usually sit in this band. If you want a large leather corner recliner, budgeting at this level is realistic. Think in cost per year, not price tag

Not sure what separates a good sofa from a poor one? Our article on how to spot a quality sofa explains what to look for, and why investing in a quality sofa pays off looks at long-term value.

The most useful way to set a budget is to divide the price by the years of use you will get. A cheaper sofa that needs replacing quickly can cost more in the long run than a better one that lasts.

Example Price Years of daily use Cost per year
Budget sofa £450 3 years £150 a year
Mid-range sofa £1,200 10 years £120 a year
Premium leather sofa £2,400 15 years £160 a year

These are illustrative numbers, but the pattern holds: for a sofa used every day, the mid-range often gives the best value per year. Premium only pays off if you value the extra features and keep the sofa for a long time.

What pushes the price up

Size and shape. A corner or U-shaped sofa uses far more frame, foam and fabric than a 3 seater.

Leather. Real leather costs more than fabric but lasts longer and wipes clean.

Reclining mechanisms. Electric recliners cost more than manual ones, and each powered seat adds to the price.

Sofa bed mechanisms and mattresses. A deeper, more comfortable mattress adds cost.

Fabric grade. Within one range, higher fabric grades and performance fabrics cost more.

Made to order. Choosing your own fabric and size usually costs a little more than stock models.

Electric recliner sofa
Power reclining adds comfort and cost. Decide which seats really need it.

Where it is worth spending more

If your budget is limited, put the money into the parts you cannot change later:

The frame. It is the skeleton of the sofa and cannot be replaced. A long frame guarantee is a good sign.

Seat cushions and suspension. They decide whether the sofa still feels supportive after a few years.

Fabric durability. For daily family use, look for a hard-wearing fabric with a Martindale rub count of around 25,000 or more.

The right size. A well-made sofa that fits your room is better value than a bigger one that does not. Our buying guides show how to measure.

Our British-made sofas carry a 10-year frame guarantee, which is one of the reasons customers choose them. Read more on our why choose us page.

Where you can save without losing quality

Fewer powered seats. One electric recliner at the end you use most can be enough.

A standard size. A 3 seater plus an armchair is often cheaper than a large corner, and easier to rearrange.

A mid-grade fabric. Many easy-clean weaves are both durable and well priced.

Simple styling. Decorative extras like studding or contrast piping can add cost without adding comfort.

Hidden costs to check before you buy

The headline price is not always the final price. Before you compare two sofas, check:

Delivery. Is it free, and does it include carrying the sofa into your chosen room? We deliver every sofa free to the UK mainland, room of choice included. See our delivery information.

Packaging removal. Some retailers leave you with the cardboard and plastic.

Assembly. Will someone set it up, or is it flat-packed?

Fabric protection. Often sold as an extra. Decide whether you really need it.

Cancellation terms. Made-to-order sofas usually cannot be cancelled once production starts. Read our returns policy.

Compare options in our guide to ex-display sofa deals in the UK.

Ex-display sofas are showroom models sold at a big discount, sometimes up to 70% off, because we are making room for new ranges. Each one is checked and any marks are noted. As an example, one recent ex-display 2 seater in grey leather was reduced from £888 to £488. See current ex-display sofas.

Sofa price FAQs

What is the average price of a sofa in the UK?

Most everyday sofas sold in the UK fall roughly between £800 and £2,000, with budget models below that and premium leather, corner and recliner sofas above it.

Is it worth paying more for a sofa?

For a sofa used every day, usually yes, up to the mid-range. Better frames, cushions and fabrics last longer, which lowers the cost per year. Above that, you are mostly paying for premium materials and features.

Why are corner sofas more expensive?

They use much more frame, filling and fabric than a standard sofa, and often have more complex construction.

Are ex-display sofas good value?

They can be excellent value, as you get a mid-range or premium sofa at a reduced price. Ask about the condition and check the cancellation terms first.

How long should a good sofa last?

A well-made mid-range sofa looked after properly should last around ten years. Premium leather sofas can last even longer.

Can I pay for a sofa in instalments?

Yes. At Homeflair you can use Klarna at checkout, subject to status, or pay a 20% deposit in our showroom and the balance before delivery.
