Fabric Sofa Buying Guide

Fabric is the most popular choice for a family sofa, and for good reason: it's warm to sit on, it comes in far more colours and textures than leather, and modern weaves stand up to children, pets and everyday life remarkably well. This guide covers what to look for, so you buy once and buy right. Shop all fabric sofas →

Which fabric?

Most of the ranges we sell are offered in several fabric families, and the choice changes how the sofa feels and how it wears.

Flat weaves and linen-look fabrics

Crisp, matt and cool to the touch. They show texture rather than sheen and hide wear well. Tight weaves can feel a little firmer than a soft pile. The everyday choice across our Buoyant and Lebus ranges.

Chenille and soft-touch weaves

The plush, cosy option with a slight sheen that catches the light. Lovely in a lounge; slightly more prone to marking from pets' claws.

Velvet

Rich colour and a soft pile. Good-quality velvet is tougher than it looks, but it does show “bruising” where the pile is pressed, so it suits a formal room better than a playroom. See our velvet sofas.

Bouclé

The looped, textured look that's everywhere at the moment. Beautiful in cream or oatmeal; think twice if you have a cat.

Easy-clean and stain-resistant fabrics

Many of our Buoyant, Lebus and VIDA Living ranges are available in treated fabrics where spills bead on the surface instead of soaking in. If you have young children, ask for these first. See the lifestyle fabrics guide.

Check the rub count

Every upholstery fabric is tested for abrasion and given a Martindale “rub” rating. Anything over 20,000 rubs is suitable for a family sofa used every day; 30,000–40,000 is heavy-duty. Swatches are on show in the showroom and the rating is printed on the back of each one.

Frame, springs and cushions

The fabric is what you see; the frame is what you'll still be sitting on in ten years. Look for a hardwood or engineered-timber frame that is glued and screwed rather than stapled, and serpentine or pocket springs in the seat.

Cushion fillings are a matter of taste, and most of our British-made ranges let you choose:

  • Foam — holds its shape, firmer sit, no plumping needed.
  • Fibre — softer, sinks in, needs a shake now and then.
  • Feather and fibre — the relaxed, lived-in look; wants plumping every few days.

Pillow back or formal back?

Formal (fixed) backs look neat and need no maintenance. Pillow backs and scatter backs are softer and more casual, but the cushions move and need plumping. If the sofa is for a room you want to keep tidy with no effort, go formal.

Colour and light

Take a swatch home. A fabric that looks warm grey under showroom lighting can read blue in a north-facing room. Neutral mid-tones (mink, pewter, oatmeal) are the most forgiving and the easiest to redecorate around; strong colours work best as a single statement piece rather than a full three-piece suite.

Caring for a fabric sofa

  1. Vacuum weekly with the upholstery tool to lift dust and crumbs before they work into the weave.
  2. Rotate and turn reversible cushions so they wear evenly.
  3. Plump fibre and feather cushions — a quick shake keeps them full.
  4. Keep it out of direct sun, which fades even the best fabrics over time.
  5. Blot spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth. Never rub.
  6. Check the care label before using any cleaner: W means water-based, S solvent, WS either.
  7. Arm caps take the wear where hands and heads rest, and most ranges offer them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most hard-wearing sofa fabric?

Tightly woven flat weaves and treated easy-clean fabrics wear best day to day. For the numbers, look at the Martindale rub count: 30,000+ is heavy-duty.

Which fabric is best with pets?

A tight flat weave or a treated easy-clean fabric in a mid-tone colour. Avoid loose loops (bouclé) and very soft piles, which catch claws and show marks.

Can I choose the fabric on any sofa?

On made-to-order ranges from Buoyant, Lebus, VIDA Living and Red Rose, yes — usually from dozens of options. Ex-display and in-stock sofas are sold as they are.

How long does a fabric sofa last?

A well-made frame with a good fabric should give 10–15 years of daily use. Cushion fillings can be replaced if they soften before the frame is tired.

Fabric or leather?

Fabric for warmth, colour choice and a softer sit; leather for easy cleaning and longevity. Our leather guide covers the other side.
